Minister for Health and Medical Services Hon. Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete launched the University of the South Pacific (USP) Annual Health and Wellness week 2019 in Suva today.
Speaking at the launching at USP, Minister Waqainabete commended the university’s effort in engaging students and staff to move towards healthy lifestyles to ensure better health for all.
“Make USP not only a knowledge based institution but also an environment that promotes health and wellbeing. It’s not only what we leaders leave behind that matters but what you future leaders can do for your younger siblings to follow is equally important”, he said.
“About 50% of the Pacific population is below the age of 25, and a significant part of USP population are within that age cohort”, Dr Waqainabete said.
“Changing mindset at Tertiary institutions therefore, forms an important part of the solution to health and wellbeing, and event as such is a great platform of empowering students to make informed choices for their health and wellness”.
He further said that the regional University needs to ensure that the provisions of such practices are provided at the campus so the students can have easy access to make it a habitual practice.
Various activities are planned for the week where students can participate and learn more on how to be health conscious.
The event was attended by students and staff of the university including medical personnel from the Ministry.
