Out of Season Tropical Cyclone Rita Headed for Fiji

An out of season cyclone most likely to be named Rita is headed right for Fiji group.

A tropical cyclone alert is now in force for Rotuma.

TD12F which Fiji Meteorological Centre has now labelled as Tropical Low is currently moving south-southeast at about 15km/hr towards Rotuma and may further intensify to a tropical cyclone in the next 24 to 48 hours.

On this track, if the depression continues to intensify, it may bring damaging gale force winds over Rotuma in the next 24 to 48 hours.

For Rotuma: expect strong to gale force winds with speeds upto 65 km/hr with gusts to 90km/hr. High seas with damaging southerly swells. Periods of rain, heavy at times and squally thunderstorms. Sea flooding of low lying coastal areas expected.

Winds may further increase to damaging gale force winds with high seas and damaging heavy swells in the next 24 to 48 hours. Periods of rain, heavy at times and squally thunderstorms.
