Biman Hits Back at Khaiyum

Leader of National Federation Party has jabbed at Attorney general Aiyaz Saiyed Khaiyum after AG said “NFP Leader has lost the opportunity to talk about Girmitiyas”.

In a response Mr Prasad says “it is becoming obvious that fewer and fewer people care about what Honourable Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum thinks, including the members of his own party. I do not need advice from him on how I should reflect on Girmit and its legacy.”

“Mr Sayed-Khaiyum wants to dwell in the safety of the past, not be reminded of the problems of the present.”

“Brij Lal is a descendant of Girmitiya, yet he is not allowed to return to the land of his birth.”

“Low-paid workers in this country include descendants of Girmitiya, but Mr Sayed-Khaiyum does nothing about raising their wages.”

“Trade unionists are descendants of Girmitiya, but they are denied the right to protest because the Government wants to make itself look good for an international conference.”

“The whole point of Girmit, 140 years on, is that the descendants of Girmitiya are citizens of this country, together with the iTaukei who have generously shared their land with us, and we are all entitled to the rights this government denies us – the right to a decent living for our poorest people, the right to dissent and to criticize the government, the right to organize and protest for workers’ rights and all the other rights this government denies us.”

“So Mr Sayed-Khaiyum and his government should focus on the challenges of the present, not bringing up issues of the past.”

“Stop the cheap criticism – and do the work we all pay you to do.”
