Fiji and Korea Boost River Bank Stabilization

Flooding, river bank erosion and sedimentation of Fiji’s waterways is a high priority for the country as it is reflected in the national policy documents.

Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development & Waterways and Environment Hon. Dr. Mahendra Reddy, in saying this, received a cheque from the Ambassador of Korea in Fiji Her Excellency Cho Shin-hee today.

“It is highly evident in our national policy documents the; 5-Year and 20-Year National Development Plan and the National Adaptation Plan (NAP), which calls for “Implementation of river bank protection activities which integrate ecosystem-based approaches with hard infrastructure, in particular, the use of riparian buffers”,” Minister Reddy added.

The cheque, which is worth US$200,000 (FJ$428,550), is a grant funding for the vetiver grass nursery for river bank stabilization and sustainable management of land and water resources project.
