Queen congratulates former Rakiraki Centenarian

Queen Elizabeth II has congratulated Fijian woman Martha Vir who turned 100 years old earlier this month.

Ms Vir who now resides in Auckland received the Queen’s message in a card on 10 July.

Family and friends gathered at her Lynnfield home to celebrate her milestone.

Born in the farming town of Rakiraki in 1919, Ms Vir moved to New Zealand in 2001 to join her children.

A family member said Ms Vir has been a widow for the past 17 years and still manages to do her own housework.

“She can do her laundry and cook under no supervision,” the family member said.

“Her age has also not discouraged her from walking to her local church.”

Ms Vir also received congratulatory messages from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy and Auckland Mayor Phil Goff.
