The Tongan Prime Minister and Tonga’s long-time pro-democracy campaigner, ‘Akilisi Pohiva, has died at Auckland’s Mercy Hospital today.
The 78 year old was medevaced from Tonga to Auckland after sufferring from severe pneumonia and liver complications.
Mr Pohiva became the Prime Minister of Tonga in 2014 before being re-elected in 2017.
Hon Pohiva was a strong leader of the pro-democracy movement in Tonga which made the monarchy really uncomfortable.
The Tongan Parliament has been deferred indefinitely as a result of Pōhiva’s death.
